From Locked Door to Open Heart

My Surrendered Story

Once Upon a Time…

Eleven years ago, I moved to Texas to begin a new life with my husband, believing his amazing love would be everything for me. Before that, I lived in Montana, wild and free, taking the time after 35 years to finally discover myself.

My life in Montana felt expansive and alive. I rode my bike to the farmer’s market, hiked in the mountains, and felt deeply connected to a community and a rhythm that nourished me. I took care of myself with simple rituals like massages, time outdoors, and meaningful friendships. I felt feminine, grounded, and joyful.

And Then, I Got Lost

When I fell in love, something started happening that I didn’t recognize at the time.

Little by little, I made my husband my whole world.

I left behind my friends, community, routines and familiar places. I moved into his home and became part of an already-established family. I wanted so badly to make everything work that I began trying to manage everything around me.

I was helpful. Very helpful.

I had ideas, solutions, books, plans and opinions. If something wasn’t working, surely we just needed to talk about it—or perhaps talk about it for another three hours. And then maybe the next morning, too.

The more anxious and distant I felt, the more I tried to control.

And the more I pushed, the more my husband withdrew.

Over the years, that dance became so repetitive and so painful - for us both. I wanted to feel seen and heard, so I pursued harder. He needed space, so he retreated farther. Arguments became bigger. Tenderness and passion disappeared.

There were nights when a closed bedroom door felt like an impenetrable wall between us. I remember sitting outside it crying, begging him to talk to me, feeling completely powerless. Anger led the charge, tears left me feeling empty and depleted.

I couldn’t understand what had happened to us. I knew we were disconnected.

Then my mother became critically ill.

I was frightened, exhausted and overwhelmed with grief, and the cracks in my marriage seemed to split wide open. Not long afterward, my husband told me he wasn’t sure he loved me anymore.

Within weeks, my mother died.

I was grieving the loss of one of the most important people in my life while believing I might also lose my marriage & the man I loved.

I desperately wanted to know how to fix him, fix us, fix something.

So I searched.

And searched.

And prayed.

And Then, I Found Hope

I discovered Laura Doyle. (And a little bit of Jesus, too.)

I remember the day I found one of Laura’s online blogs about stonewalling, which introduced me to her work and eventually to the Six Intimacy Skills™.

For the first time in a long time, I felt something I hadn’t felt about my marriage:

Hope.

I began learning and practicing the Six Intimacy Skills™.

I started small.

Lots of duct tape.

Lots of self-care.

I booked a massage. I started walking in the mornings again. I stopped chasing conversations that weren’t happening. I began questioning my habit of “helping.” I practiced respect in ways that initially felt completely foreign to me.

And slowly, something extraordinary began happening.

I started finding me again.

Not because someone else suddenly became different.

Because I did.

I began remembering the woman who had ridden her bicycle to the farmers market for fresh strawberries and flowers. The woman who loved beauty and nature and adventure... pampering & luxury. The woman who had desires of her own.

I began receiving private coaching from a Laura Doyle Certified Relationship Coach. For the first time in a very long time, I felt deeply seen and understood. I didn’t have to defend myself or prove that I was right. I could simply tell the truth about my experience.

The transformation I experienced through The Ridiculously Happy Wife™ coaching platform was so profound that, just months after discovering the Skills, I enrolled in Laura Doyle’s Relationship Coach Certification program.

I wanted to learn how to give other women the kind of support & connection that had meant so much to me.

As I continued practicing the Six Intimacy Skills™, they challenged me to look at what was actually within my control: me.

When difficult conversations came, I practiced listening instead of defending. I learned the power of “I hear you.” I began honoring my desires, restoring my self-care and recognizing that another person’s feelings weren’t mine to manage.

And I began filling my own life again.

Friends. Walks. Tea. Gardens. Beauty. Faith. Laughter. Rest. Creativity. Coaching. Little adventures. Delicious things. Things that had absolutely nothing to do with whether someone else was pleased with me that day.

The Moment Everything Changed

It was a moment I’ll never forget.

I was lying in a hammock, wrapped in a blanket with a cup of tea, when the realization washed over me: Even if nothing outside of me changed, I was going to be okay.

I wasn’t waiting for someone else to make me happy anymore.

I was happy. I was safe.

Today, I know that I cannot control another person’s heart, choices or journey—and I don’t need to.

What I can choose is how I show up.

I can honor my desires. I can show up with dignity. I can listen without abandoning myself. I can receive. I can choose respect. I can fill my own life with beauty, connection, pleasure and purpose. I choose how I show up.

And I can love without losing myself.

And Then, I Came Home

The woman who once sat outside a locked door, crying, believing her happiness was on the other side of it doesn’t live there anymore.

I found the open door back to myself.

My life today feels full, feminine, peaceful and wonderfully alive. I’m miraculously secure in who I am and clear about how I want to show up in love & life.

My story is still being written.

But perhaps that’s the most beautiful part.

I don’t need to know the ending to know that I’m already blooming.

I’ve learned that my happiness and femininity are mine to cultivate—and are so magnetic. When I tend to my own joy and self-care, life begins to open in unexpected ways. I’ve found my way back to love within myself, and I know who I am more deeply than ever. I feel feminine, joyful, light, free, and secure. My story is still being written, and it feels full of possibility, a little magic, and the promise of beautiful things yet to come.

And perhaps, in my own small way, I get to be part of something bigger- a gentle return to balance between the feminine and the masculine, where there is more room for trust, receiving, respect, and grace.

Today, I’m so happy to be a Laura Doyle Certified Relationship Coach, trained in Laura Doyle’s relationship-coaching methodology and the Six Intimacy Skills™. It’s now my privilege to support other women as they discover what’s possible when they begin bringing their attention back to the one person they truly have the power to transform—themselves.
